Defining a workflow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Workflow<\/strong> is the IT modeling and management of all the tasks to be performed and the various actors involved in the implementation of a business process (also known as an operational process or business procedure). The term ” workflow<\/strong> ” could therefore be translated into English as “electronic management of business processes”.<\/p>\n

In a more practical way, the workflow<\/strong> describes the validation circuit, the tasks to be accomplished between the different actors of a process, the deadlines, the validation modes, and provides each of the actors with the necessary information to carry out their task.<\/p>\n

For an online publishing process, for example, this is the task modeling of the entire editorial chain. It generally allows for follow-up and identifies the actors by specifying their role and how to best fulfill it.<\/p>\n

The workflow engine is the software device for running one or more workflow<\/strong> definitions. As a misnomer, this software device can simply be called a “workflow”.<\/p>\n

In this definition, an important point for the development of a workflow is to be noted: The workflow describes the validation circuit, the tasks to be performed between the different actors of a process, the deadlines, the validation modes, and provides each of the actors with the information necessary to carry out their task.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An in-depth study of one or more of the company’s processes is therefore essential before creating a workflow.<\/p>\n

The automation of functional workflows (e.g. validation of the line manager) is generally the result of a desire to homogenize, rationalize and optimize communication within the company.<\/p>\n

When studying a workflow, it is necessary to distinguish and highlight:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Objects that are part of the business process: paper, electronic, or other…<\/li>\n
  • The different states of the objects: created, modified, in the process of being validated, validated,…<\/li>\n
  • Actors interacting with the workflow: validation, correction, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Deadlines for processing a task<\/li>\n
